Leistchamm (2101m) is “racy” peak above Amden, a small summer and winter resort closed to Zurich (40 minutes drive). The peak is mostly climbed in summer as it takes only about 2.5 hours to climb the peak on a good (sometimes slippery) trail. The views of the Walensee Lake (1’700m below!) and the peaks to the South are spectacular!!

The Leistchamm is relatively seldom climbed in winter as the North face is quite steep (30-40 degrees) and the ridge is most often windblown, limiting the skiing experience. I have climbed this peak many times in summer and winter and – while conditions were not always great – I was never regretted to do this tour. While in summer it can get quite crowded on the weekends, in winter I always enjoyed the views on top alone. Also check out other ski tours in the vicinity of Zurich here.
Tour tips Leistchamm: In good conditions the tour is quite easy if you are not afraid of skiing rather steep slopes. There is a parking lot at Arvenbüel, above Amden. The parking is usually full on sunny Sundays. Also, maybe take some ski crampons in case it is icy. Below you see the ascent and descent routes. Going down it is safest to stay on the green line. Do not go too much to the left (as seen from below) as it gets vertical further down below. If snow conditions are good you might find some still steeper skiing on the right. On the map (below) you see the normal ascent route to the North. One also take a small ski lift (to be paid in cash) and follow along the face of Leistchamm (no tracks usually!).
