Flüela Wisshorn (3085m) – Classic Alpine Skitour in Davos (with a bit of climbing)

The Flüela Weisshorn is one of the few “skiable” 3000+m few peaks around Davos. Note: The last 100m to the peak have to be climbed on a steep ridge and (shoe) crampons are highly recommended. The ridge can be dangerous when it is icy!

The other 3000+m peaks in the area are: Flüela Schwarzhorn 3145m (not a great ski tour, see here), Scaletta Horn 3067m (long, but scenic tour from Dischma Valley with a very steep Northern descent, see here), Aeplihorn 3006m (a popular and pretty easy peak reachable from Monstein, see here), the Gletscher Ducan 3020m (great intermediate tour from Monstein as well, see here) and finally the Chüealphorn (“Cow Alp Peak”) 3077m, reachable from Dischma or Sertig Valley (mainly done in Spring, great scenery, last 100m quite steep).

Flüela Wisshorn is quite a popular tour, so there should be always tracks and – more importantly – also steps in the very steep Northern ridge to the top (crampons recommended). Follow ski route 551 (link here) from Tschuggen, where you park your car. Skis are usually left a point 2939m, even tough sometimes one can ski down the very steep (40 degrees) couloirs from the top. The climb to the top can be tricky or even dangerous when it is icy. Crampons and maybe an ice axe are advisable. There is a narrow horizontal ridge on the top which leads to the Southeast summit.

Skiing from the top is possible (in safe conditions!!) either in the steep Northerly slopes left (when looking from above) of the ascent route (see pictures below) or there are also colouirs towards the Southeast. The ski descent from the peak is very steep (up to 45 degrees) so snow conditions should be very safe.

Flüela Weisshorn seen from the North. Ascent on left ridge. Steep ski descent possible in the middle of the face.

After having climbed this great peak, one skis usually down to the Jöri Lakes (route 551c) and the climbs up again to point 2771m (route 551b). From there one can ski down to Rossboden, or directly to Tschuggen traversing North about midway on the down route. Note: The slopes there again are quite steep (35 degrees). So make sure there is no windblown snow around (a typical avalanche danger situation in the Flüela Valley).

The more ambitious skiers head up (from the Jöri Lakes) to the Jörihorn (2844m) and try to ski the Northwesterly slopes directy down to Tschuggen. Usually no tracks there!
