New Year’s Pictures 2022/23

Snow conditions this year, so far, have been less than ideal. It snowed only a little and currently (December 23) it is raining up to 2000m. I thus cannot provide you with decent ski touring pictures from this ski season. So I posted a few shots from earlier years (with some further comments and information below).

Comments on the pictures in the gallery:

Schiberg
The Schiberg (“Ski Mountain”) is a smaller peak, easily reachable from Zurich. The ascent starts at the beautiful Wägital Lake (850m). For the last 100 meters, ski have to be carried and crampons are advisable. The scenery on Schiberg with its steep faces is stunning and one would not think that the peak is only 2000m high. Tour report here.

Isentällispitz / View of Grialetsch Mountains
This is great ski tour starting from Tschuggen, on the road to the Flüela Pass. The scenery and the views are superb (including the Grialetsch mountains to the East and all the way to the Bernina peaks to the West). The last meters are quite steep, but experienced ski tourers can keep on their skis on to the very top. The pictures (below) looks down the steep South face of Isentällispitz with two ski tourers seen below heading up to the small pass on the left. Tour reports for this and other tours in the Flüela region can be found here.

Galenstock
The Galenstock is the highest peak in the Canton of Uri in Central Switzerland. The 3586m high peak is mostly climbed in spring, when the Furka pass road is open to Tiefenbach. The 1500+m climb requires some easy to moderate rock and snow climbing. The ascent is trickier in summer than in winter (when the steep North ridge still has some snow). The views of the surrounding rocky peaks are quite stunning. I have done this tour 3 times, though with increasing age the climb gets more and more challenging. We skied down the steep slope lower on the mountain on two occasions (see second picture below). See tour report here.

Flüela Weisshorn
This is one of the classic longer ski tours in the Davos region. The climb on the exposed North East ridge requires some easy climbing (crampons advisable). Many ski tourers therefore stop at the saddle about 150m below the peak. In very good and safe conditions one can ski down directly from the top either on the North face (see first picture below) or towards South East. During February 2019 a large rockslide shocked all of us who have been going to that peak on a regular basis. Happily, the “slide “accident” occurred during the night as the slide covered the ascent route with meters of rocks (see second picture below).

Chörbschhorn
The Chörbschhorn (2650m) is a safe and one the most popular winter tours in the Davos Region. (In summer the peak is popular with mountain bikers as there is now a good downhill trail carved into the slopes). While the tour does not pose any challenges it is with a 1150m ascent not really short. The hut below the Chörbschhorn is a great place to relax on the small benches and enjoy the sun. As the route is heavily used the skiing down is advisable over either the Erb Alpen or via Lochalp directly down to Davos. See tour report here.

Gemsstock Region
One of the better offpiste and ski touring areas in Central Switzerland is South of the 2968m high Gemsstock (which can easily be reached by gondolas from Andermatt). The region offers many tours with a real backcountry feeling. If the Southerly Föhn wind has been blowing conditions are awful. Otherwise one can find always nice powder with only 30 minutes or so of climbing. Tour report here.

Gletscher Ducan
The 3019m high Gletscher Ducan is one the longer ski tours in the Davos. The peak can be reached from the picturesque village of Monstein or from the end of the Sertig Valley. While the peak can be popular at times, the slopes are wide (see first picture below) and the powder is usally great. The glacier below the peak is melting away quickly but rests can still be seen in summer (second picture).
